Split Bill Calculator
Split a restaurant or group bill evenly, including a tip and any extra charges, with the leftover cents shown openly.
- Enter the bill total and number of people.
- Optionally add a tip % and extra charges (e.g. delivery).
- See what each person pays.
Applied to the bill only
e.g. delivery or service fee, not tipped
How it works
Enter the bill, the number of people, and optionally a tip percentage and extra charges like delivery. The tip is worked out on the bill only, then the tip and extras are added to give the total.
The total is divided by the number of people and rounded down to the cent. Because money can't be split into fractions of a cent, a few people pay one extra cent so the shares add up exactly to the total. The calculator shows who pays what, so nobody is left short.
The method is the same one many people use at the table, just without the mental arithmetic. Because the shares are calculated to the cent and then balanced, the group always pays exactly the total, with no one quietly covering a few extra coins or the restaurant being short. If one person is paying the whole bill and collecting from others, the per-person amounts tell them exactly what to ask for. The calculation works in any of the 15 supported currencies.
Formula
Tip = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100
Total = Bill + Tip + Extras
Per person = Total ÷ People, rounded down to the cent; leftover cents are paid by some people
Worked examples
$100 bill, 15% tip, 3 people: total $115. Two people pay $38.33 and one pays $38.34.
Dinner for four
Bill 180, 10% tip, 4 people: tip 18, total 198, 49.50 each.
Uneven cents
Bill 100, 15% tip, 3 people: total 115. Two pay 38.33 and one pays 38.34.
Takeaway with delivery
Bill 62, no tip, 5 delivery, 2 people: total 67, 33.50 each.
Understanding the result
Money can't be split into fractions of a cent, so leftover cents are assigned to a few people. That way the shares always add up exactly to the total.
Common mistakes
- Tipping on the total after delivery and service charges, which over-tips.
- Forgetting a service charge already added by the restaurant, then tipping again.
- Rounding every share up, which collects more than the bill.
- Splitting evenly when some people ordered much more — agree on it first.
When to use it
- Restaurant meals and nights out with friends.
- Shared takeaways and grocery runs.
- Splitting household bills between flatmates.
- Group gifts and trips.
